Train breaks down on Sydney level crossing

A TRAIN has broken down at a level crossing blocking the main road through a northwestern Sydney suburb.

Drivers are being urged to avoid Garfield Road at Riverstone, which has been shut in both directions, the Transport Management Centre (TMC) says.

"Traffic is heavy in the area and there is no forecast as to when the road will be reopened," the TMC said.

People travelling on the Richmond branch of the T1 western train line are also warned to expect delays and allow extra travel time.

There are no reports of injuries.
